Since last Sunday, the government has reported the deaths of at least 19 America soldiers in Iraq. A recent outbreak of fighting in Baghdad between US and Iraqi forces and one of the largest Shiite militias (the Mahdi Army of anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr) is largely to blame. Al-Sadr, reported to be in Iran, repeated his demand that American soldiers leave Iraq and urged his fighters not to target Iraqis “unless they are helping the [US] occupation.”

Last month, 61% of the US military deaths occurred in Baghdad. In February, the figure was only 28%, according to figures compiled by The Associated Press.

14 bodies were also uncovered in a field south of Baghdad by Iraqi soldiers acting on tips from detained Shiite militiamen. It marks the second discovery of mass graves in the area this week, bringing the total of bodies located there to 45. The bodies are thought to be the victims of a cycle of retaliatory violence between Shiites and Sunnis that occurred more than a year ago.
