During the movie Eagle vs Shark, the protagonist demonstrates his affinity for candle-making by showing a “Twin Towers” candle, with several wicks sticking out of the sides, near the top, while saying “I could sell this to the Muslims.” I laughed. Very hard.
Why? I don’t know. It just seemed hilarious when I saw it. Don’t worry though, his next candle was of a stereotypical muslim with wicks all over him… the quote: “And I could sell this one to the yanks.” Also hilarious.
So, has 9/11 become funny? Its been almost 7 years since the tragic events of that day, and in that time we’ve had to endure color coded terror watches, the Department of Homeland Security, increased TSA scrutiny to the point of abuse, domestic surveillance programs, the war in Iraq, the torturing at Abu Grahib, etc. etc., and now our economy is entering a recession as a result. Looking back on those 7 years, what else can we do but laugh?
Its often said that the events of 9/11 “changed everything,” and I must admit, it has. The Constitution, for one, seems to have less and less importance as the years go on. We’ve given up several of its most sacred ideals: the separation of church and state, protection from unwarranted search and seizure, the right to trial, freedom of the press and speech, freedom of peaceable assembly, cruel and unusual punishment, governmental checks and balances… as many declarations as there are in the Constitution, there are examples of times when this administration felt it could simply ignore or bypass them altogether at its own discretion, literally making a mockery out of the document itself.
If 9/11 has become funny, its not because of what occurred on that date, but because of the things that have happened since: the poor judgements, the deception, the mistakes, the oversights, and the lies. The list of things that our government has been able to get away with by using 9/11 as justification is flat out staggering. So staggering, in fact, that to think about it all at once can’t help but make you laugh.
