PETA for Porn

Anyone who walks around naked for a living knows this simple truth: sex sells. It sells cars, sports, and now, political activism. PETA, or the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has built upon its successes with porn star/”actress” spokeswoman Pamela Anderson by bringing other naked people into the animal rights movement. But, just who are these nude proponents of synthetic fabrics and how do I see them wearing none of it, you might ask? Well… I do deliver (with the small exception that none of these sites really feature any nudity):

Eva Mendes Poses Nude to Speak Out Against Fur

Playboy’s Holly Madison Poses Nude to Help Animals and Proclaims ‘I Always Fake It’

Jenna Jameson Wants You to Pleather Yourself

Drill-Sergeant-Turned-Playboy-Model Michelle Manhart Says, ‘I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur’

Joanna Krupa: ‘I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur’

And even: Steve-O: I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur

Everyone of those links is to a PETA website, and the titles have not been altered. Don’t get me wrong, I like what these women are doing (Steve-O’s doing a great job too), and I do get the whole “I’d rather go naked than wear fur” thingy … I’m just wondering if this really is the best way to promote the cause? Is nudity really the alternative to wearing fur that PETA’s going to present? What ever happened to: “Cotton, the fabric of our lives”? Is America really so dumbed down that the only way they’ll accept the idea that being cruel to an animal is wrong is if some hot chick takes her clothes off for it?

It occurs to me that what PETA is doing is no different from what strip clubs do… offering nude women in the hopes of getting your money. What ever happened to “class”? Sure, the idea is clever, and yes, it will bring in people, money and attention, but is it the one PETA should’ve chosen? Will it enhance their image in the long run? Will people see them as a more reputable organization? I don’t think so.

The Truth has been putting on anti-smoking television ads quite succesfully for some time now. I’d even go as far as to say that one or two of the first ones (who doesn’t remember all those body bags lying around?) will go down as some of the really great television commercials of all time. Can’t PETA do the same? Wouldn’t a city block full of dead cows get people’s attention too? (Ok… bad, creepy example, but you get the point).

So, it is quite possible that PETA is committing organizational suicide… but on the other hand, they do have a lot of good looking sponsors. In other words, if this is the way non-profits will be advertising in the future, I’ll be happy…. but will they?

Hey, it beats showing up at events with paint and eggs!

I don’t think PETA’s out to say anything about themselves, so whether or not they hurt their own image is irrelevant. I think this philosophy of ‘whatever it takes’ is the only one that organizations like PETA can adopt these days.

Maybe we can get like, Adriana or someone to stand naked on top of a glacier and declare her love for stable temperatures.

Its a pity that Peta is still fighting a dying industry, while 98% of the animals sent to them for protection they submit to euthanasia. Still ignorant and surprised? http://www.petakillsanimals.com for more.
