You can’t put a price on life… or can you?
The US government, or more specifically the Department of Defense, has been paying money to the families of innocent civilians killed or injured by US Forces in Iraq as a form of “condolence.” However, there is no regulation when it comes to dollar signs. It is up to the individual commanders to decide how much goes to whom.
Why no official oversight? Simply because that would require the military to collect official statistics on civilian casualties, a duty it currently neglects, citing the absence of any law compelling them to do so. I say one is deeply needed.
