Saddam Hussein has lost his final appeal and an Iraqi court has ruled that he must be hanged within 30 days. Is capital punishment (i.e. death) an appropriate punishment for his crimes? Remember, he has been accused and convicted of the murder of 148 people in a 1982 massacre. However, is his punishment going to deter further world dictators from rising to power? Absolutely not. So… what do we actually hope to gain from putting Saddam to death? When we put serial killers to death in the states, we can reasonably assume that the penalty influences others not to commit the crime. But with Saddam, his death wont accomplish that. So I ask again, is death an appropriate punishment?
